Grinding relies on a spinning wheel that is covered with rough particles. The particles cut chips of metallic or non-metallic substance away from a workpiece to either make it flat or give it a smooth surface called a face. This is done with exacting tolerances and fine surface finishes.
Centerless grinding is a method of material removal similar to centered grinding expect there is no spindle used. Instead, the workpiece is fed between two grinding wheels rotating in the same direction but at different, pre-determined speeds (depending on how much material will be removed with each pass between the wheels). Centerless grinding has a high throughput so that large numbers of parts can be manufactured in a short amount of time. This speed keeps cost-per-part rates low and is also why centerless is the ideal grinding option for large volume production runs.
Here at United Scientific Inc we offer extensive centerless grinding services: through-feed, end-feed, and in-feed. Each of these offers different feed options and approaches as well as wheel configurations and coarseness.
Through-feed is ideal for cylindrical parts as the piece will move across the entirety of the wheels, from one end of the machine to the other. End-feed grinding is most appropriate for tapered parts as the machine is fed axially from one direction, then fed again from the opposite direction. Alternatively, in-feed is used for odd-shaped and/or intricate parts where they are individually placed in the grinder before the wheel is set, thus taking more time but offering more precision and per-part attention.
With multiple machines operating in each of these capacities, our centerless grinding department provides us the flexibility to complete your jobs however you demand, at a desirable price, and on schedule.
